Research Projects
NCCPHP conducts research on a number of topics, ranging from foodborne diseases to factors affecting evacuation during hurricanes. Examples of recent research projects conducted by NCCPHP include:
- The roles of social cohesion, social capital, and social control associated with risk of evacuation failure from Hurricane Isabel in North Carolina
- North Carolina's capacity to plan, prepare for, and respond to public health emergencies
- Organization, function, and capacity of North Carolina's Public Health Regional Surveillance Team system and the teams’ impact on the public health system’s preparation and response to potential threats and hazards
- Acute diarrheal illness diagnosis, counseling, and reporting practices among laboratory and healthcare practitioners in North Carolina
- Sensitivity of foodborne disease surveillance, using the capture-recapture methodology
- Performance of timely electronic public health surveillance systems in North Carolina
- Evaluation of the Emergency Department Data Stream of the North Carolina Disease Event Tracking and Epidemiologic Collection Tool (NC DETECT)
- Developing public health informatics tools for outbreak management of foodborne diseases in North Carolina
- Timeliness and completeness of case reporting in the North Carolina communicable disease surveillance system
- Rapid assessment of the public’s perception of the H1N1 vaccine in Orange and Alamance counties, North Carolina
- Demographic features, risk factors, and use of health care among individuals with acute HIV infection in North Carolina
- Unexpected transmission of HIV among college students in the southeastern United States
NCCPHP also shares staff with the North Carolina Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center (NCPERRC), a new research center funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to strengthen and improve public health preparedness capacity through systems and services research.
