Preparing for Antiviral Use and Distribution

Local demonstration project findings presented at national preparedness conference

...

Antiviral Map

Findings from a study of western North Carolina prescribers and pharmacists’ use and distribution of antiviral medications were presented by Richard Rosselli of the North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness and Chris Emory of the Buncombe County Health Center at the Public Health Preparedness Summit in San Diego, Calif., on February 20, 2009.

This NACCHO-sponsored project included a survey of prescribers and pharmacists on their knowledge, attitudes and practices about antivirals for influenza in western North Carolina, conducted at the conclusion of the 2007-2008 influenza season. In addition, a full-scale exercise of Buncombe County's local receiving site for the distribution of antiviral medications was conducted in April 2008.

The Preparedness Center provided survey design, data collection and analysis expertise to Buncombe County Health Center for the prescriber survey. Of the 118 antiviral prescribers in western North Carolina who responded to the survey, 87% had prescribed antiviral medications for treatment of influenza-like illness during the 07-08 influenza season. When asked to rate their knowledge about usage of antiviral medications for influenza on a scale of 1 (not at all knowledgeable) to 4 (very knowledgeable), the mean rating was 3.1.

Results from the surveys and lessons learned from the local receiving site exercise are available from the NACCHO website.
