Custom Trainings

The North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness will undertake specific curriculum development and training projects upon request. Working with partner agencies, NCCPHP has experience developing public health trainings in multiple modalities for audiences at all different levels with particular expertise in field and applied epidemiology as well as disaster mental health. We have particular expertise in developing distance learning programs.

Our trainings:

  • include both face-to-face and distance learning formats (Web, video, CD-ROM),
  • have varying ranges of interactivity to match a target audience’s technical skills/capabilities, and
  • address different levels of cognitive learning (knowledge, application and synthesis level) appropriate for a wide range of audiences.

In recent years NCCPHP has contracted with international, national and state partners to provide curriculum development for a wide variety of projects. Examples of recent projects include:

Projects for state health departments

  • A short online course about pandemic influenza for local health department staff
  • A hybrid Internet/classroom training course for local health department public health nurses responsible for communicable disease surveillance and reporting
  • A self-guided training program designed for local health department staff and community volunteers to build awareness of the psychosocial consequences of disasters
  • A curriculum for local health department epidemiology teams with individual and group activities addressing applied epidemiology competencies designed to improve team functioning

Projects for federal agencies

  • Revision of the CDC’s foundational courses in forensic epidemiology and public health law
  • A face-to-face curriculum for avian influenza rapid response teams across the United States
  • A training on the psychosocial consequences of exposure to radiological events

Projects for international agencies

  • A curriculum for training avian influenza rapid response teams in Southeast Asia
  • Overall curriculum design and development of specific course modules for a CDC field epidemiology training program in Central America
